The IWCT has been providing direct support to Haapsalu Children’s Home. As most know, they suffered a terrible accident- a fire which destroyed their building and took the lives of 10 young people.
IWCT members went out on the day after the fire and delivered teddy bears and cuddly toys, as well as some clothing. While there, we noticed the chaos with all their possessions piled in black plastic bags and people searching through them for clothing for the kids.
We followed up by sending 24 large clear plastic storage containers to the home with another member on Thursday, so that they could sort and store all the clothing, toys etc which they managed to save from the fire, as well as items which have generously been donated to the home following the fire. They requested a bunk bed, as they are currently in “camp-like” conditions and thanked us for the storage boxes, which had already been put into use by Thursday evening. On Friday we sent a bunk bed with two mattresses as well as another 18 large and extra large clear plastic storage boxes to the home. To date we have supported the Childrens home with just over 1000 EUR (storage containers, bunk bed with mattresses, transport).
The Director of the home sent us a thank you note for our support and especially thanked us for our speed and effectiveness in providing the support.
Thank you to Pesapuu furniture store, who provided us with a 20% discount and thank you to Nadia Liind, who donated the money to pay for the transportation to Haapsalu. We also thank the members of IWCT who have donated cuddly toys, clothing, and money to help the surviving children at Haapsalu Children’s home.
If you wish to support our efforts in helping the Haapsalu Children’s Home recover from the effects of the fire, you are welcome to donate funds to our charity account, specifying that it is to support the Haapsalu Children’s home.
At this point the home does not need any clothing, etc, they have received more than they can use at the moment. We are in contact with the home and will respond to their specific requests for help. However, if you have items to donate- clothing, footwear, bedding etc- please contact our charity liason- Karin Andersen at charity /at/ iwct.ee She collects items and distributes them to various Children’s homes and other needy organisations in Estonia.
